Looking for a free web host

I'm currently looking for a host for a new site I am working on. I've found suitable paid services. In the spirit of this blog, though, I'd like to try and do it as cheaply as possible. Ideally I'd like to start on a free service, with the option to upgrade if necessary.

I need a free host offering the following:

* PHP and MySQL support
* At least 100Gb transfer per month, or the option to pay for an upgrade up to this level
* the ability to use my own domain name (not yet purchased)

Bonus points if it offers any of the following:

* Regular backups
* Email addresses
* Wordpress support
* Site stats

If you know of such a host, please let me know. I am happy to signup through a referral link. Thanks.

I may have what you are looking for. Please visit my current blog site: PokerGreed.com. I have recently taken on additional authors to the blog.

I have purchased and begun setting up FinancialGreed.com, and will be looking to do the same on FinancialGreed. Specifically, I am looking for authors with similar goals and interesting stories. Read the post about the free blog on PokerGreed, and review how I have the authors set up there to get an idea of what I have in mind at FinancialGreed.

Please email me through the PokerGreed website if interested. Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately it's not what I'm looking for (what is on offer here is a guest blogging spot on either of the two sites mentioned). The project I require hosting for is for unrelated to finance (and poker!). It is going to be a large project and I also need to have full control over the source code.

Thanks again though, and good luck with your blogs.

Earthlink offers free website with 100 meg. I have a site (such as it is) wherein I sell my embroidery designs. Check it out if you'd like at:

You don't have to be an Earthlink subscriber to have a free website.

Thanks Mickey, I'll check it out.

in my experience, free = completely awful.

total choice hosting has unbelievable support and has everything that you could ask for for only $4..

Cheers Marie. As if to prove your point Blogger has been preventing me from being able to comment for the past 15 minutes!

I agree with you on this and think I will probably go with a paid host. My new project is going to involve a particular period of time when the site must be live. I just can't take the risk associated with free hosts.

I had really been hoping to find a host which offered the same service to free and paying customers, but with the paying customers getting more space, bandwidth, etc. That way I could start the project for free (and reduce the cost associated with failure) and then pay as it began to grow. Some services offer this kind of thing, but their free accounts are just too restrictive (i.e. no php and mysql support). So I guess it has to be paid.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Go to http://home.fil.ph. It's free and it supports WordPress.

For MySQL activation, go to http://netph.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7665#post7665
and post there, letting the moderators know that you want a database for WordPress created.

I just found a great hosting company that are good value. I had tried unsuccessfully to get a free hosting deal very similar to the one you have described, but it was a wash-out. these guys are the businsess, however! So, if dr fil can't set you up, give them a try: http://www.designRweb.co.uk

You might want to check out www.100webspace.com - they offer a great free 100MB PHP/MySQL hosting.

Thanks everyone for your feedback on this post. I've looked into all the suggestions. I'm going to give it a bit more thought before I make my final decision. Thanks again.

I know that you said a free webhost. Just in case you're ever looking for a paid one that is reliable, affordable and worth the money: try Shieldhost.

Hello Dan,

I looked at your blog but more importantly, your mission. The mission impressed me and I am willing to bet on you just because you have set your goal and you are putting it in print.

I will provide the free hosting for you. It will have everything you need and much more. Perhaps you can put a small ad or two on your pages in return. Then when you make your million (which you will!) You can buy me dinner.

I happen to believe in people who believe in themselves!
